HIGH FREQUENCY

Dinner is served at nine. Dressed endive and then vegetables, beans or chard garnished with boiled potatoes. First the priest and then the mechanic, they punctually occupy their seats next to each other at the table located in the center of the poorly lighted dining room. The trivialities of the day are discussed. The mechanic talks mainly about motors and their legal strength, the house’s owner predicts a dry and miserable year, and the priest stays away from such tribulations. The clock strikes eleven and the mechanic asks for the radio; an opera is being broadcasted on HF from the Lyceum. The receiver is located at the center of the Formica table and the overture spreads across the small dining room, being occasionally interrupted by the distant voice of an Arabic radio host.

ONDA CORTA. A las nueve se cena. Escarola aliñada, luego, verdura, habas o acelgas acompañadas de patatas hervidas. Puntuales, primero el sacerdote y después el mecánico, uno al lado del otro ocupan su lugar en la mesa situada en el centro del comedor humildemente iluminado. Se habla de las menudencias del día. El mecánico principalmente de motores y de su fuerza fiscal, el dueño de la casa predice un año seco y miserable, el cura permanece ajeno a esas tribulaciones. En el reloj dan las once y el mecánico pide la radio; desde el Liceo radian una opera en la onda corta. El receptor se sitúa en el centro de la mesa de formica y la obertura se esparce por el pequeño comedor, a ratos interferida por la voz lejana de un locutor árabe.
